Autumn in the Highlands Autumn can be one of the best times of year in the Highlands - the leaves slowly turn from green to yellow and red, lighting up the glens with a warm glow. Red squirrels scamper about gathering in food for the approaching winter while stags roar defiantly from the hillsides and salmon make their way upstream in our rivers. This is a great season for hillwalking, photography, nature-watching and relaxing in the freedom of the Great Outdoors. To help you plan your autumn escape we've put together an array of things to see and do this Autumn throughout the Highlands of Scotland. Just log onto the VisitScotland Autumn Moments website for a selection of inspiration ideas of where to experience the dramatic scenery of the Highlands, spot some rare wildlife and simply relax in the colourful countryside. From 19th to 31st October all attention for Scotland's Year of Homecoming will be on the Highlands as the festival atmosphere moves north. Expect a warm Highland Homecoming welcome as locals and visitors enjoy the best of our rich heritage and culture with a programme of over 100 events including spectacular street theatre, music, storytelling and of course our world famous ceilidhs. All of this is happening around Scotland's Global Impact Conference which will explore the theory that our small nation did indeed change the world!
