Cunningham secures gold for GB at World Championships

More than 10,000 excited spectators cheered, clapped and stamped their feet as eighteen year old Scot Ruaridh Cunningham became the first British man ever to win a World Championship title (in the Junior Downhill) at the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships ? powered by Nissan Sports Adventure - at the Nevis Range and Forestry Commission's Leanachan Forest in Fort William this yesterday.

Amid a cacophony of cowbells and whistles, Scottish youngster Cunningham hit the finish line ahead of closest rival and silver medal winner John Swanguen (USA) and Matthew Scoles (NZ) in third place.

700 of the World's top riders from more than 50 nations worldwide competed across the four mountain bike disciplines of Cross Country, Downhill, 4-Cross and Trials for a total of 19 World Championship titles.

It was estimated that 40,000 mountain bike fans and outdoor enthusiasts descended upon the idyllic highland setting to watch the most skilled, high octane, adrenaline fuelled mountain bike action ever seen in the UK.
