Lochaber receives Global Geopark status. Lochaber's landscape received world wide recognition with Global Geopark status bestowed on them at the UNESCO International Geopark Conference held in Osnabruck, Germany. This award, from the same body that allocates World Heritage status, means that Lochaber is recognised as being a prime location to visit for its earth heritage and will raise its profile across the world as a major holiday destination amongst the discerning tourist looking for a special place to visit. The geopark is noted for its superlatives with perhaps the most well known being Ben Nevis - the highest mountain in the British Isles at 1344m, 4409ft. In addition to that they also have the deepest loch, most westerly point in mainland Britain, longest glen and deepest pothole in Scotland.
