New South Loch Ness Trail launched Visitors to Loch Ness can now discover the delights of the less well-known south shore with the launch of a new 28 mile trail offering unrivalled access to the area. The newly launched South Loch Ness Trail provides a newly connected, unbroken route along the legendary loch allowing primarily walkers, as well as cyclists and horse riders, to gain a new perspective on an area that has long been a favourite with fans of outdoor pursuits. The Trail runs from Loch Tarff near Fort Augustus in the west to Torbreck on the outskirts of Inverness in the east and climbs to heights of 1300ft in places. This offers an attractive way to explore the southern shore and enjoy this spectacularly scenic area with its dense pine forests, picturesque waterfalls and wonderful wilderness feel. Attractions along the route include the Falls of Foyers, the finest surviving example of a single span General Wade Bridge dating from the 18th Century, and the remnants of an Iron Age fort. In the longer term there are plans in place to connect the South Loch Ness Trail to the iconic Great Glen Way (a favourite with walkers from across Europe and further afield) as well as the imminent potential to link up with the Great Glen Canoe Trail, expected to be completed Spring 2012.
