Golf in the Highlands
If you thought that the Highlands were all about ruggedness and wilderness, then that is not strictly true. For a start, tucked into these fine landscapes are at least 46 golf courses, among them several superb old courses, the work of the great golf course designers of old, such as old Tom Morris, James Braid and Donald Ross.
The fame of Highland courses reaches its height, perhaps, with the great classic east-coast championship courses at Nairn (past host to events such as the British Amateur Championship and the Walker Cup) and also Dornoch whose grand seaside links have earned it the title of "the St Andrews of the North".
However, there are plenty more surprises for the Highland golfer, including, for example, Boat of Garten by the River Spey. Described in the golfing press as the most enjoyable inland course in Scotland, this birchwood delight was designed by the famous James Braid. Then there are a whole range of quirky courses, set in the hills, such as Helmsdale or Strathpeffer, as well as smaller courses where it is easy just to turn up and play.
Many accommodation providers in the Highlands will be happy to arrange golf as part of your package and in addition there are a number of specialist golf agents. Breathe in the aroma of malt Whisky Country from the highest tee in Scotland at Dufftown or the enchanting new development at Ballindalloch Castle.
From Reay, Thurso and Wick in the north, to Fort William in the shadow of Ben Nevis, and from east coast gorse and sand at Brora or Tain, to west coast scenic delights at Traigh, Gairloch or Durness Highland golf, in all its variety, has something for players of all standards.
