Wildlife Attractions

Exploring our nature reserves really does emphasise the importance of this area for conservation.

For example, the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve was the first of its kind in Britain and its superb mountain and pinewood habitats are the place to see deer, eagle, pine marten and a whole lot more. The island of Handa in the north west has magnificent cliffs and seabird colonies. Near Nairn in the east, the Culbin Sands (Royal Society of the Protection of Birds) is a hot-spot for waders and sea-duck.

The many nature reserves in the Highlands reflect its habitat diversity. The RSPB's Flow Country introduces the unique boglands of the north, while their reserve at Abernethy interprets the Caledonian pinewoods. Nearby, their Loch Garten reserve features Britain's most famous pair of ospreys, whose domestic life on the nest has been closely watched for many years from the comfort of their visitor-centre. Close-circuit tv is a feature of some nature reserves and wildlife sites, making easy the viewing of sea eagles on Skye, red kites on the Black Isle, Herons near Lochinver and hen harriers in Sutherland.

Of course not all our wildlife is land-based and a variety of boat trips go out into our seas to let you see them close up - particularly seabird colonies or whales, dolphins and seals.

Wherever you travel, you will find wildlife sites in plenty, with organisations such as Scottish Natural Heritage, RSPB, The National Trust for Scotland and the Scottish Wildlife Trust working to ensure the valuable habitats of the Highlands are protected for your enjoyment.
