Shopping
The Highlands offers a different shopping experience - yes, there are the High Street names including Britain's northernmost branches of Marks & Spencer & Debenhams but often more distinctive are the smaller shops and craft outlets, where in many cases the goods are even made on the premises!
In Inverness, the Highland's main shopping centre the individuality of the shops in the old Victorian market contrasts with the modern Eastgate shopping Centre, expanded significantly in 2003.
Elsewhere in the Highlands, the larger towns have a good range of shops of all types while many of the rural areas are home to a variety of craftspeople producing and selling work of outstanding quality. The very landscapes are an inspiration, and the peace and tranquillity a creative motivation helping them produce brilliant ceramics, beautiful jewellery pieces, weaving and knitwear, glassware, pottery and stoneware all with distinctive styles. And as well as shopping you can often view the producers at work.
